An invitation to AE families, patients and survivors
The AE Alliance invites all AE families, patients and survivors to join together for lunch following the Florence Forth road race. This is a time to meet other AE families, share stories and connect with the AE Alliance Board members.
We will return to The Pit again this year for North Carolina barbecue, veggies, cornbread, dessert and sweet tea. More details are available at FlorenceForth. The costs of the lunch are covered by the AE Alliance as a thanks to all AE families and patients traveling and participating in the Florence Forth event.
Space is limited so we ask everyone to RSVP here. Two important reminders:
- RSVP’ing for the family lunch does not include registration for the Florence Forth run/walk. If you would like to participate in the run/walk, please also register for Florence Forth road race.
- With limited space, we ask that patients and survivors invite only their immediate family members.
AE Family Lunch – share stories; make connections
One of the attendees at last year’s family lunch was Emily Gavigan. Emily wrote about her Florence Forth experience in a November 2014 blog post on the AE Alliance website. Emily’s blog post shares the initial feelings of apprehension that is expected when showing up in a new town for a new event. But she beautifully describes how those feelings were quickly replaced with feelings of connection and support after meeting other AE suvivors. The following section of her blog post tells of the family lunch after the race.
“After the race, the AE Alliance graciously held an intimate luncheon for AE patients and their families. At first, I was a little nervous to be surrounded by all these people who shared some part of this terrible disease. I sat down to enjoy the delicious southern barbecue. I relaxed and began to take in what was one of the most powerful experiences of my life. Everyone chatted and mingled and connected.
I met a family with two strong teenage daughters who watched their mom suffer with AE – and then saw her through recovery. They were standing by her proudly, smiling. I met families who had heard the story of my recovery and were inspired and filled with hope. I met a team of beautiful women who ran to honor the daughter, sister and friend that they lost to this disease. We cried. We laughed.
It was very emotional to meet people from all over who have been affected by AE. It affirmed my decision to attend the Florence Forth Road Race, even more than the accomplishment of finishing. And I was glad to have the support of my friends and family there.” – Emily Gavigan, AE Alliance blog post, November 25, 2014
