Race Day Parking
All runners should park in the Erwin Square parking deck located at 2200 West Main Street, Durham. NO race day parking in the Harris Teeter or Elmo’s parking lots. Please respect local merchants by not parking in other lots.
The parking deck should be entered from Rutherford Street. Parking attendants will direct you in from Main Street and Hillsborough Street. Parking signs will also be at nearby intersections to direct you towards the parking deck.
Once parked, look for signs directing you to the registration area, located about a quarter mile from the parking deck.
Run the Race Distance on your Bib
Bib transfers and switching of races cannot be accommodated at this point. Your bib has a chip that is programmed for the race you registered. Switching races (especially from the 10K to the 5K) will result in disqualification. Please help us by not switching races.
Race Course Logistics
Lining up: Look for pacing signs when lining up. These signs will help runners line up at the appropriate place for your expected race pace. There are no race pacers running the course.
Kids: We have many kids registered, which is awesome! Parents, please have your kids start behind the competitive racers. Florence Forth is the 10K State Championship and we expect some very fast runners at the front. We want to avoid dangerous situations if a kid stops suddenly.
Be Aware, course splits: The 10K and 5K courses start together and then split after the 2-mile aid station. 5K runners turn right onto Main Street. 10K runners turn left onto Main Street. Volunteers will be in the street prior to the intersection to alert you. DON’T MISS YOUR TURN!
Dogs, Scooters and Baby Joggers: While we love our own dogs and know you love yours, dogs and other animals are not permitted on the race course or the post-race celebration. Similarly, scooters, rollerblades and other wheeled things should not be on the course. The exception is that baby joggers are allowed to start at the back of the race.
Water & Aid Stations
10K course will have two aid stations, one near the 2 mile and 4 mile marks. The front table will have water while the second table will have Powerade.
5K course will have one aid station near the 2 mile mark. This station is shared with the 10K course.
Port-A-John will be located just before the 2 mile aid station on the right side of the road at the intersection Watts St & Dacian Ave.
To ensure all participants reach the finish line by 9:30am, a minimum pace of 15 minutes per mile will be enforced in the 10K. A minimum pace of 30 minutes per mile will be enforced in the 5K. A trailing bike rider (10K) and walker (5K) will maintain this pace. Participants who fall behind these pace times will be asked to move off the road and use sidewalks. The road will reopen to traffic at this point.
Food and Refreshments
Coffee: Thanks to George’s Java who is providing us with coffee during registration until it runs out. Please visit George’s Java and thank Debbie and Terry for sponsoring the race. Their store will also host kids activities provided by HappyMess Art Studio.
Post-race Food: Enjoy local food and drinks after the race. A special thanks to the Durham Co-op Market, Coca Cola, Big Spoon Roasters, MATI Energy and ZICO Coconut Water for providing a range of post-race food and drink options. In addition, the bagels this year are provided by H&R Block. Ninth Street restaurants JuJu, Dain’s Place and Elmo’s will offer brunch bites and bar service for sale at their locations. Stay around and enjoy some yummy local food.
Kids’ Activities: Happymess ART will run an art station and letter writing for sick kids at Duke beginning at 7:30 am inside of George’s Java located at 9th and Markham. There will also be face painters and balloons for kids. Come color the street with sidewalk chalk.
Kids Cape Dash: Kids will begin to line up at 9:20 am for the 9:35 am Cape Dash down Main Street. Children of all ages are encouraged to participate. For children under the age of five, 50 home-made capes have been donated by Toni Mason, owner of Sew Crafty. If your child has a cape from last year’s race, please bring that one to trade in or wear again in this year’s Cape Dash.
Recovery Zone: After the race, ATI Physical Therapy and Empower Personalized Fitness will be available with rollers, stretching and other cool down activities.
Live Music: As the runners start and after the race, local cover band Plan B will be playing live music.
Information Tables: Come meet representatives from the Autoimmune Encephalitis Alliance, H&R Block and Tilthy Rich Compost to learn more about each of these organizations.
Award Medals: All finishers this year will receive a medal. For overall top finishers and age group winners we have a place ribbon to add to your medal. Check the monitor near the finish line to see if you won an award. You can pick yours up at the award table as results are made available.
